Rebuilding the Postpartum Athlete: A Holistic Guide to Your First Eight Weeks

Jun 29, 2021

This week we have some VERY exciting news!! We are launching a one-of-a-kind postpartum course that combines the knowledge of a pelvic floor physical therapist and pregnancy & postpartum athleticism strength coach to teach you WHY, WHEN, and HOW to make a safe return to postpartum exercise.

This week-by-week guide will cover everything from restoring your core & pelvic floor function, stretching and exercises routines, and useful tips to set you up for success. The ultimate goal of this course is to help postpartum women recover from childbirth and return to activity confidently with an appropriate timeline.

In an ideal world, every birthing person would be able to have a pelvic floor physical therapy visit at 6 weeks postpartum, just like they already have a OBGYN visit at 6 weeks. The musculoskeletal system of the deep core and pelvic floor is extremely important to our wellbeing, and the specifics of that system are not looked at in depth during a general OBGYN check up. Pregnancy and childbirth cause many physiological changes to a woman’s body that can lead to common yet treatable issues such as incontinence, pelvic pain, painful sex, pelvic pressure or heaviness, diastasis, and general difficulty returning to exercise. Check out our earlier blog, Postpartum Recovery Does Not Stop at 6 weeks, for more details on this.

While this program is not a substitute for pelvic floor physical therapy or strength coaching, it is a helpful tool to bridge the gap of misinformation and the common mistake of getting back to exercise “too fast, too soon.” Each week, you will have access to a focus video, a deep core rebuilding workout, and a helpful tip targeted towards the specific stage of postpartum recovery. Courtney Edgecomb, PT, DPT of Regenerative Edge PT & Wellness and Antonia Henry of A1FitCoaching have teamed up to develop this unique course developed specifically for postpartum athletes. As athletes themselves and providers in postpartum pelvic health, they have collaborated on the best form of online postpartum recovery to ensure a safe, effective return to exercise.
